Identification |
About 1/8-inch long with brown color. Pavement ants are identifiable by the grooves on the head and thorax.
Habitat |
This ant's name is derived from its preference for nesting in soil next to
and beneath slabs, sidewalks, patios, and driveways. Colonies are usually easy to find due to the piles of displaced soil next to and on top of pavement. Indoors, pavement ants nest under the foundation and within hollow block foundation walls. Occasionally, a colony may carry soil up into a wall to form a nest. When piles of soil appear from under baseboards or on top of a basement or garage floor, it is a good sign that pavement ants may |
 |
be present.
Food Source |
These ants feed on almost anything including insects, honeydew, seeds, plant sap, and household foods such as meats, nuts, cheese, honey and bread, but show a preference for meats and grease.
Life Cycle |
New pavement ant colonies are started by a single queen ant that lays the eggs and tends the brood that develops into worker pavement ants. Tending of the brood is then taken over by the worker ants, which shift the brood from place to place as moisture and temperature fluctuate in the ants nest. |
