Identification |
The real name for "Killer Bee" is Africanized Honey Bee. The size is about 1/2-inch in length with golden-yellow with darker bands of brown. Some specimens appear a darker brown than others.
Habitat |
In the United States, the AHB has become established from Texas over to southern California. Colonies have also been discovered in Florida and a few other southeastern states but these have been quickly eradicated. caves and cracks in rock formations. Occasionally, a colony will decide to nest inside a crawl space, an attic, a wall void, or a chimney in a home.
Food Source |
Africanized honey bees feed only on nectar (carbohydrates) and pollen (protein) from flowers just like honey bees. They sometimes visit trash cans and soft-drink containers to feed on sugary foods.
Life Cycle |
African honey bee eggs hatch regardless of whether the are fertilized. The female bees--queens an workers--develop from fertilized eggs that contain 32 chromosomes. These 32 chromosomes consist of two sets of 16, one set from each parent. Hence female bees are said to be diploid in origin. The males (drones) develop from unfertilized egg which contain only one set of 16 chromosomes from their mother. Drones are thus haploid in origin This reproduction by the development of unfertilized eggs is called parthenogenesis.
