Identification |
Tiny insects measuring about 1/6-inch in length and are laterally flattened. The color is reddish brown. Their flat shape allows cat fleas to easily pass between the hairs of animals. The cat flea is the species involved in most home infestations and will attack both cats and dogs. It is usually carried into the home by a pet. Once inside, large populations can build up quickly.

 |
Food Source |
Adult flea's diet consists solely of blood, the larvae feed on various organic matter, including the feces of mature fleas.
Life Cycle |
Adult fleas must feed on blood before they can become capable of reproduction. Eggs are laid in batches of up to 20 or so, usually on the host itself, which easily roll onto the ground. As such, areas where the host rests and sleeps become one of the primary habitats of eggs and developing fleas. The eggs take around two days to two weeks to hatch.
Additional | Powerful legs enable them to jump 7 to 8 inches vertically, and 14 to 16 inches horizontally. Carrier of parasites and disease organisms to human and animal hosts. |
